I examine the settlement of Mozambican refugees, during the war for independence from Portugal, in Tanzania between 1963 and 1976. My research explores the roots of rural refugee settlement in Africa, and the subsequent use of former Mozambican refugee camps as Tanzanian socialist (Ujamaa) villages.
